From the Swan Market to her own restaurant
Fifteen years ago, owner Liz came to the Netherlands from Mexico City with a passion for Mexican gastronomy. Her dream was to introduce the Netherlands to real Mexican cuisine.
Her dream has come true! After having a stand at the Swan Market and a successful pop-up on the West-Kruiskade, it was time for her own restaurant on the Adrien Mildersstraat.
Liz is often in the kitchen herself and is also happy to chat with you about the preparation of the dishes and the thought behind each dish. You can really tell she has a true passion for her work.
On the menu of Sabor Sabor
Through the dishes of Sabor Sabor you travel to different areas in Mexico. Each dish comes from a different part of the country. Everything is very colourful and full of flavour. You can also share many of the dishes together, which is always fun and a great way to get a taste of everything.
Liz takes your dietary wishes into account. So just let the staff know if you’re vegan or gluten-free. This makes Sabor Sabor a super accessible restaurant.
During my visit I (together with my boyfriend) got to try out a lot of the dishes: Guacamole sol y luna, Botana milpa, Sopa azteca (tortilla soup), Sopa de frijol (bean soup) and Calabacitas enchiladas (vegan enchiladas).
My personal favourite dishes from that evening are the Guacamole Sol y Luna (delicious fresh guacamole with three different corn chips), the Sopa Azteca and Sopa de frijol. In addition, I found the Botana Milpa to be a tasty and versatile dish. They are all snacks with which you can compose your own tortilla. You get the tortilla in a kind of special fabric folder so that it stays warm.
The dessert Dulce entre amigos with corn cake, chocolate cake and homemade cheesecake is also worth mentioning! The cheesecake in particular was truly heavenly.
Fancy a cocktail? Be sure to try the margarita tradicional. I found it really super tasty and I’m personally not even a fan of tequila. Other cocktails are also on the menu, such as the Acapulco Sunrise and sangria. Delicious on hot days!
Prefer something non-alcoholic? Then try one of the homemade lemonades. I tried the Jamaica (with hibiscus water) and Agua de Horchata. Both tasted good, but the Agua de Horchata in particular stood out. It is lemonade made with rice and it is very creamy and sweet. I would recommend everyone to try!
