A place with a story
Matelief opens its doors in an iconic location where famous seafarers from history come back to life. For example, striking artworks of naval heroes by artist Barre Verkerke adorn the walls.
The art on the walls is not the only connection with Rotterdam’s maritime history. You can find the restaurant in the former Maritime Pub. The place where Rotterdam sailors drank their drink at the bar.
Does the name Matelief ring a bell? Maria Matelief was born in Rotterdam at the end of 1500. As the widow of a herring merchant and with seven children, she managed to survive in the male-dominated shipping world.
“The character of the Rotterdam shipping industry and that of Maria Matelief are reflected in the restaurant. Thanks to the bright colours and bold art on the walls, the interior is daring. The menu is sturdy, with many snacks, fish dishes and strong, matching beers. At the same time, there is also a soft and feminine side; this is reflected in the warm lighting plan, the refinement of the dishes and the round shapes of the bar and benches,” says spokesman Pablo Cortes Garcia.
What’s on the menu?
Thanks to the extensive drink and dinner menu, there is something to choose from at Matelief for everyone. On the menu you can spot quality fish dishes, such as roasted halibut with ratatouille and a whole sea bream from the grill.
There are also meat dishes, such as tender beef ribeye with chimichurri and guinea fowl fillet with gnocchi. Prefer no fish or meat? Even then there is a wide choice, such as grilled pumpkin with candied onion cream or jackfruit shawarma.
Grab a terrace in Rotterdam
With a sunny south-facing terrace, Matelief will be a great place to be this summer. Here you are right on the water, where you can enjoy the beautiful view. For example, order a nice specialty beer or a delicious wine and hang out on the terrace for an afternoon.
Is the weather bad? Then there is plenty of room inside. The brand new interior is characterized by the warm colours, comfortable seating areas and the light wood of the bar. Thanks to cleverly concealed and innovative LED lighting, the overall appearance is modern and welcoming.
