Fish and wine, wine and fish, this is surely my favorite and one of the finest combinations in the world. As the title suggested, I ate fish, in the middle of the Rotterdam at Fish in the City. I honestly had no expectations of this restaurant before I went. The location is already very cozy: the Scheepstimmermanslaan. I must confess that I sometimes forget that this place exists, but once I arrived I thought ‘yes’ this is a lovely piece of Rotterdam.

Our very friendly host (and owner) chose dishes from the menu and wow, I ate so much and so good. First, we were served a Sauvignon with calamari, shrimp croquettes and mackerel pate. This calamari is freshly marinated and is only cut just before frying. And that mackerel pate, ah, it just melts on your tongue… The recipe comes from a brasserie from France and it tastes like a little piece of heaven.
Signature Dish: the delicious fish and chips
After all the appetizers – which already made me quite full- a fruity white wine from South France was poured. Then came the signature dish: Fish and Chips. The owners have been able to do a good field study in Ireland on how the authentic fish should taste. The nice thing about these fish and chips is that despite the authentic taste they use local products to create them. The fries come from potatoes from Hellevoetsluis and the batter is made with Guinness beer from the cafe next to it.
Actually my stomach was already exploding, but of course the lobster roll had to be tasted. The third wine that was served with it had a particularly fine taste that fitted well with the sweet bun. The lobster is served in a delicious sauce on a brioche bun and is also served with fresh fries.
Fish in the City: ideal place for bites & delicious wines
All in all, I was positively surprised by Fish in the City. The passion of the owner is reflected in the food and it makes you extra enthusiastic about your food. It’s a good place to eat smaller bites with a delicious wine or if you have a bigger appetite you can order a dish with fries. It might feel like a hotspot to get a quick bite, but from experience I can guarantee you will want to stay a little while longer!
Tip: They also serve lunch from Wednesday until Saturday.
Tiptip: Come back regularly, because the menu changes each season.
Tiptiptip: If you’re craving something sweet, order the chocolate cake made with a recipe from Ireland.
