Every other week we ask a local about their favourite spot in Rotterdam. This could be anything: from a fancy restaurant, breakfast place or club to the local zoo and park.
The Ask the Local series is a great way for tourists to get some inspiration for awesome locations to visit in Rotterdam.
This time we spoke with Ruby about Bertmans in Rotterdam North.
Unfortunately Bertmans in Noord will close its doors permanently on July 31st 2019. You can still visit their location in the city center.

What is your favorite place in Rotterdam?
“Bertmans in Rotterdam North”
Why is this your favorite place?
“Bertmans is different from other lunchrooms in Rotterdam. You can have absolutely delicous lunch here and they only use healthy products. My favorite dish is the spinach of spelt bread with cinnamon, palm sugar and apple. The vegas also have more than enough choice.”
How do you know this place?
“Bertmans is just outside of the city center and so is my house. I live nearby so I frequently ride past it!”
How often are you here?
“At least once a month.”
What do you think is so special about Rotterdam?
“The people. Rotterdammers are pure and sincere. They are proud of the city and want to get the best out of town. We have a saying: “Niet lullen, maar poetsen” (literally don’t talk, but clean), and you can really see that in the city’s mentality. Even if you look at our history, Rotterdam has been bombarded and everyone has worked hard on our reconstruction. We also say: in Rotterdam we earn the money, in Amsterdam they spend the money and in The Hague they talk about the money. I’m a real Rotterdammert and I am proud of the city and our mentality.”
